What to expect in Year 1?
We are very proud of all children settling well into Year 1 as In Year 1 everything starts to become a little more formal, as the freedom and play of Reception are replaced with more organised activities. This is a very important year for the children as this is the first year of the National Curriculum. Like all year groups, Year 1 has government statutory schemes of learning to follow. There are a wide range of topics covered in Year 1, and your child will undoubtedly have their personal favourites. Some of the Year 1 activities include: assisting children and young people to be increasingly able to make an informed and mature response to God in faith and to nurture that faith (Religion); experiments (science) product design (DT); learning about the past (history) and about the local area we live in (geography). We also develop their social skills and empathy for each other during RE and circle times. Year 1 is an important year for your child’s increasing independence.
Phonics
Phonics is a big part of Year 1. Your child will continue to expand on their knowledge of phonics during daily phonics sessions.
There is a Year 1 phonics screening test in June, which helps your child’s teacher to identify if your child is secure in sounding out and blending graphemes. It also detects if they can read phonically decodable words.
Here are some useful resources to help you to support your child at home:

Reading
Reading at home with your child is so important. It helps them to develop their learning in lots of areas.
Here are some tips on how to help your child develop the love of reading.
Get comfortable!
Snuggle up together somewhere warm and cosy, whether it’s in bed, on a beanbag or on the sofa. And make sure your child has somewhere comfy to read on their own too.
Read whenever you get the chance!
Have a book or magazine with you for any time your child has to wait, like at the doctor’s or the dentist.
Enjoy bedtime stories!
Read with your kids at bedtime as often as you can.
Ask questions.
To keep them interested in the story, ask your child questions as you read. Start with ‘Where did we get to last time?’, ‘Can you remember what’s happened so far?’ and ‘What do you think will happen next?’.
Read favourites again and again!
Maths
Maths lessons in our class are very enjoyable, with plenty of hands-on activities where children use variety of models (concrete) and images (pictorial). This is to help them to become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics, reason mathematically and to solve problems by applying their mathematics to a variety of routine and non-routine problems.

English
The English national curriculum is a structure that schools use to make sure teaching and learning are balanced and consistent. It defines: the subjects taught. the knowledge, skills and understanding required in each subject. In our class we use a range of exciting texts and class activities.
